Food Poisoning Prevention and Home Remedies

Food poisoning is a common issue in our contemporary life. Rarely, it can even prove to be fatal. It is caused by contaminated and spoiled food. The symptoms of food poisoning often depend upon the source of contamination.

Symptoms of Food Poisoning include

  • Headache or migraines
  • Fever

Causes of Food Poisoning

Microbes can be found all around us, especially in raw and uncooked foods. Often, food is contaminated by organisms that come in contact with fecal matter. Meat and dairy products are most likely to be contaminated.

Food poisoning is caused by the presence of harmful microbes in food and water. The usual microbes that cause food poisoning are bacteria like E. Coli, listeria, salmonella, etc., parasites like toxoplasma and viruses like Norovirus, Sapovirus, Astrovirus, etc. Depending on the source of contamination, food poisoning can last from a day to two or three. If it lasts more than that, it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately.

Home Remedies of Food Poisoning

1. Banana

Bananas are high in soluble fiber and hence is soothing to the stomach. High amounts of potassium in banana helps replenish electrolytes lost due to vomiting and diarrhea. Also it is filled with energy. Eat a few bananas to feel better during food poisoning.

2. Apple cider vinegar

In spite of being slightly acidic in nature it has an alkali like effect. This is due to the way it is metabolized in our bodies. It soothes acidity in the gastrointestinal tract because of food poisoning. Add a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a cup of warm water and drink it before having food.

3. Ginger

Ginger has natural anti fungal and anti bacterial properties. Adding ginger to food can help relieve the symptoms of food poisoning. You could alternatively make ginger tea and drink it to feel better.


Another root similar to ginger, usually available in powdered form. It has anti-inflammatory properties and anti-bacterial properties like that of ginger. Add a pinch of Turmeric to milk and drink it. Adding a teaspoon of ground black pepper makes Turmeric more potent.

5. Basil/Tulsi leaves

Basil and Tulsi belong to the same family. These herbs have anti microbial properties and help relieve the gastrointestinal tract of stress. Put a few leaves in a cup of water and let it soak for an hour. Drink this water to find relief from food poisoning.

6. Honey

It’s sweet and has anti bacterial properties. Take about three teaspoons of honey a day to relieve yourself from symptoms of food poisoning.

As with most diseases prevention is better than cure. With food poisoning it is better to prevent it instead of having to suffer through vomiting and diarrhea.

Simple Preventive Measures for Food Poisoning

  • Washing hands before eating
  • Washing meat and vegetables thoroughly before cooking
  • Cooking meat thoroughly
  • Avoiding food that was left open for a longtime
  • Preparing food with proper care and hygiene.
  • Make sure water used to cook is safe.
